| Ticket sales open for 2011 Build It Green! Home Tour
From owners to developers to do-it-yourselfers, the emergence of women in the design/build industry is reflected in this year’s BIG! Tour |
| One of the year’s best opportunities to learn about green building techniques happens at the 10th annual Build It Green! Home Tour and Information Fair tour on Sept. 24, 2011. Presented by the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, the self-guided tour will feature 22 green remodels and new homes around the Portland metropolitan area. Tickets are now on sale at Green Depot (formerly Ecohaus) and at www.portlandonline.com/bps/builditgreen.
“For the past 10 years, the Build It Green! Home Tour and Info Fair has introduced the elements of green building to thousands of Portlanders through a fun and engaging event. Thanks to promotions like this, Portland can boast one of the largest concentration of green building professionals per capita in the country. It’s another great way to make sustainable practices the easy choice for our residents,” said Portland Mayor Sam Adams. This year’s tour includes something for everyone: June Key Delta House, a community center constructed with shipping containers; a Greene and Greene-inspired American Arts and Crafts home; an upgrade project by Clean Energy Works Oregon and even a home on wheels. Many of the homes and affordable housing include solar panels, ecoroofs, rainwater harvesting, natural landscaping, water and energy conservation, reused building materials, alternative construction techniques and small footprints (accessory dwelling units or ADUs). Visit www.portlandonline.com/bps/bigtourpreview to see a preview of the tour homes. Homeowners and contractors will be available to share their personal experiences and to answer questions. A FREE family-friendly information fair will be a prelude to the tour with green vendors, demonstrations, food, drink and music. Details

What the mayor has to say about curbside food composting!
Filed Under Uncategorized · Tagged:
Dear Portlander,
I’m excited to announce that the City of Portland is one step closer to delivering curbside food composting citywide. Today, City Council took up a long-overdue proposal that will enable Portlanders to easily compost food scraps by placing them in their green yard debris roll cart instead of the garbage.
By taking this step, we can decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills and reduce green house gases released by decomposing food. Food scraps can then be turned into nutrient-rich compost for agriculture and gardening.
Many than 90 cities across the country, including Seattle and San Francisco, have successfully implemented similar programs. I’m eager to see Portland begin its own program and am confident city residents will not only support the change, but find that putting aside food scraps for composting beccomes as natural as putting paper and cans aside for recycling.
Please take a look at the video and FAQ below to learn more.
Yours,
Sam Adams
